When I taught middle school chorus, one of my greatest joys was watching students discover that they could actually read music.

Not guess.

Not imitate.

Not wait for someone to play it on the piano.

They could simply look at the notes on the page and sing them.

That skill changed everything.

For the past 13 years, my S-Cubed Sight Singing Program for Beginners has been used by hundreds of classroom teachers and thousands of students. It has been refined, tested, and proven in real classrooms by music educators across the country.

But recently, I began thinking about a different group of children.

What about the child who loves music but doesn't have a piano or other instrument at home?

What about the family who wants to give their child a strong musical foundation before they ever choose an instrument?

Or homeschool families looking for a complete music reading curriculum they can use at home?

That's why I created the S-Cubed Homeschool Edition.

This isn't just for homeschoolers.

My teaching philosophy has always been simple:

By the end of Level One, students will be able to:

• Read music independently.

• Sight-Sing music examples a cappella (without a piano or adult helping).

• Read skips as wide as an octave accurately.

• Perform syncopated rhythms accurately.

• Confidently use the Curwen hand signs to locate pitches.

• Sing a chromatic scale in tune.

• Have excellent ability to identify sharp/flat and in-tune singing.

• And have fun while they do it!

Those are remarkable skills for beginning musicians.  I wasn't able to demonstrate some of those skills until I was in college.  

Whether your child eventually joins choir, learns an instrument, sings in church, auditions for musical theatre, or simply enjoys making music, learning to read music is a gift that lasts a lifetime.
