In middle school, students' bodies are changing so quickly. So many of them aren't comfortable at all with how they look to the outside world. The awkward period of adolescence can cause many of them not to feel attractive which can impact their self-worth and cause them to withdraw and try to be invisible.
That's why I love the musical Shrek.
The themes are acceptance, friendship, love beyond appearances, breaking stereotypes, empowerment, and belonging.
One of my favorite songs is "Freak Flag". My students loved performing that song when I was in the classroom. I think they felt empowered to be a little odd, and they killed it!
In this lesson, you will get-
*Info on how to watch Shrek the Musical
*20 questions on the plot that you can use as a quiz or they can complete it as they watch
*Details about the 6 main themes of the musical
*7 activities to dig deeper into the themes of the musical from role playing, analysis, special friendship web activity, art projects, skits, and more.
*You'll get guidance on how to do improvisation along with 10 improvisation exercises. Once you've established how to do improv, you can apply the improv to the characters in the musical and have students act as the character in various improv settings! Lots of fun!
